About Us

FERNWEH - [feirn-vay] is a German word describing an ache for distant places: missing places you have never been. My wife and I are seeking a cure to this problem in our lives.

My wife Laura and I have been retired since 2018. Which has allowed us the time for adventure. In 2018 we purchased a 2015 Subaru Outback - the Green Aero, and drove to Alaska. We spent 54 days on the road. Three weeks driving around and exploring the Last Frontier. At this time we had never heard of Overlanding. I also had been Geocaching since April 2009. So I have been searching back roads for awhile.

In 2020 MATACO came into our lives. A 2015 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab SR5 4x4. It has the 2.7 ltr engine and had 17,000 miles on the odometer. A ton of Youtube videos and some inspirational words of encouragement. I decided that I wanted to do the TAT - Trans America Trail. This meant that I needed a trail capeable vehicle. The modifications began shortly after that.
